The knitting club had been meeting for eleven years, and not one of them was as tense as later that evening when we gathered in Wanda’s cream-and-green living room. Even Ursa continuously whimpered, unable to settle, scurrying between the five of us—sitting at Pamela’s feet, then mine, padding over only to be shooed away by Minnie, then repeating the pattern.

An old clock on the fireplace mantel ticked, making a beat alongside the click of knitting needles.

“Okay… what’s going on?” Cassidy laid down the cornflower-blue booties she was knitting for an upcoming baby shower and looked at the four of us. At her motion, Ursa jumped up from where she’d sat beside Wanda and trotted over to nudge Cassidy’s free hand. Obliging, Cassidy began to stroke Ursa’s head. “I feel like someone died and nobody wants to tell me or something.” Her cheeks flushed instantly. “Oh. No disrespect to Jim, of course.” She narrowed her honey-brown eyes. “Did somebody else die and nobody wants to tell me?”

“Oh, don’t be daft, girl.” Minnie scoffed Cassidy’s way but didn’t pause in her knitting. She didn’t offer more of an answer, either, glancing toward the three of us and then back to the work in her lap.

The conversation we’d had in the church parking lot the day before had prompted Pamela to suggest the four of us meet at Wanda’s house a little early—before Cassidy arrived—to discuss the matter at hand. As a group, we decided that if you loved someone, you brought up your concerns. You were honest with them. You spoke your truth. However, now the moment was at hand, it felt like we were all having second thoughts.

“I made a sheet cake earlier.” Wanda threw a hand behind her, gesturing toward her kitchen. “John took half of it to the guys for their card game tonight, but I could sure use some chocolate. How about you all?”

“That sounds great.” Pamela practically leaped from her chair. “I’ll help you.”

At the movement, Ursa bounded away from Cassidy, ready for an adventure, or crumbs more like.

“Now you two stop that.” Acting like Minnie, Cassidy actually pointed one of her knitting needles at Pamela, and then gestured toward the seat she’d just vacated. “What is going on? I can feel there’s something. The looks the four of you keep giving each other indicate something about me.”

She was as Pollyanna as they came, but Cassidy was no dunce. “Well…” I placed my knitting project in my lap and folded my hands. When we’d discussed this, we hadn’t actually assigned roles or anything. That might’ve been smart. I glanced at Wanda and Pamela, both of whom gave little nods. Apparently I’d been elected. Plus, I knew I’d better jump to it before Minnie decided to take it upon herself and make it as crass as possible. “We’re… the four of us… a little concerned.”

Cassidy straightened a bit. “With me?”

“With your Romeo.” I hadn’t been fast enough, as Minnie found her voice. “Just like the one in the play, he seems a little… intense.
